Revolutionary Changes in Copenhagen Cuisine
When it comes to balancing between being cosmopolitan with a cozy flair, expect no other city but Copenhagen to come to mind. Nowadays, it is considered one of the world's most livable cities - in fact, Copenhagen almost always makes it to the top five - with many residents and visitors calling it the most wonderful of all European cities (don't argue London, Paris and Stockholm) where architecture, design and fashion are concerned.
Still, despite all its wonderful attributes, Copenhagen was not exactly known as the culinary capital of Europe. With very rare exceptions to the norm, the restaurant scene was nothing to write home about, really. It was an underwhelming experience compared to the rest of its glowing attributes so much so that you can virtually predict the menu in many restaurants.
And that menu revolved around the staples of pork, potatoes and herring, all of which were edible as far as food goes but not sufficiently savory to consider it filling to the soul. Indeed, in a country where kings and queens ruled and where home furnishings and house ware were avant-garde, the food remained in the Middle Ages.
Fortunately, in come the new breed of Danish chefs with their revolutionary ideas in cuisine, which came from a deeply-rooted sense of nationalism combined with a thoroughly international exposure. Thanks to an interest in learning from top-notch culinary schools and a hunger for exposure to international cuisines, these relatively young Danish chefs have made Copenhagen more than worth the visit to its restaurants, cafes and bars.
Of course, fusion is ‘in" with traditional Danish ingredients given a modern twist and an international flavor. Or as is the case many other chefs, old Nordic recipes are being resurrected together with forgotten herbs and spices and then presented in a different way so that both old and new seamlessly blend in one savory dish.
You will not be at a loss for a variety of dining options either. Copenhagen boasts of 2,000 restaurants and cafes, many of which are in the Tivoli Gardens, the Town Hall Square and the Central Railroad Station. Just look around you and you are sure to find a restaurant that will cater to your gastronomic needs of the moment. Well, of course, it pays to be adventurous so don't be shy about it either.
And just so you know, Copenhagen restaurants are now rated one of the best in the world with numerous restaurants having the coveted Michelin star posted on their entryways. Still, despite its metropolitan feel in dining, you will still find that the cozy atmosphere of Danish dining, which the Danish call hyggelige, is always present. Think of it as dining in the cozy atmosphere of home but with excellent service and food befitting a king or a queen.
But of course, after all your adventures in dining, you will want to go to a hotel Copenhagen where you can rest your body, allow it to digest all the delicious food and then be ready for yet another gastronomic adventure tomorrow. And speaking of hotels, we suggest that visitors book their hotel rooms online even before traveling to the city. With its millions of visitors annually, you want to be assured that you have a good place to stay without competing tooth and nail with other visitors. Now, that is revolutionary in international travel!
