The Locals Best Spots in Copenhagen, Denmark

One of the best ways to enjoy living in Copenhagen, Denmark is going where the locals go to have a good time.   The adventure will give you the rare chance to enjoy the out-of-the-way places where locals meet to talk, eat, drink, and yes, discuss world affairs.  These are the places where you will chance on the beautiful people of Denmark and learn as well as enjoy their lifestyle.

Punk Music and Politics

In Overdrevet things are different.  The old youth house which was torn down was replaced with the Det Nye Ungdomshus.  Everywhere else, things are the same but in the Nye Ungdomshus the youth still troop there in the evenings to listen to their favorite punk music after their elders had a fill of the jazz.  But the place is a top people drawer for the monthly hip-hop gathering espousing leftist sentiment but this does not stop people of all political stripes to enjoy the fun.

These days the place is the ‘cornerstone of the "Young Punk Movement;" this is where you can find hard rock music and drinking and the bar is aptly called The Deathmachine. To understand why the place is a favorite watering hole of the young, it used to be a rendezvous point for leftist groups and untonomen way back in 1982 but was torn down in 2007.  But the place is back and rocks.

Upstairs is a cozy cafe where scores of books can be found but if you don't read Danish, you might have to hunt for books in English.  But the place is only open during the daytime - a nice hideaway after all the sight-seeing in nearby areas.  You can find Overdrevet in Dotheavej 51, NV.

Biking

Copenhagen is a place for bikers so get off that taxi and rent a bike to tour the city.  You can get all the feel of this bike mania in the Museum of Copenhagen where the history of the biking tradition is well documented and preserved.  Bike history enthusiasts can get a good dose of local inventions, the Long John or Christiana, bikes that had a place in the daily lives of the locals back then.

Run with the Locals

Wake up early on a Sunday and join the free running practice.  People are gearing up for the Nykeredit Copenhagen Marathon 2010.  This would a fine time to make new friends at the Ostebro Stadium where people meet up for the practice; with 1,000 people bunched into groups, you are sure to make a few friends and work up those jet-lagged legs.

Hotels and Hostels

Copenhagen offers the best in hotel and hostel accommodations.  Tourists have a pick of five star hotels, bread and breakfast inns, apartments, and hostels.  Hotel accommodations are best made online.  Online hotel booking has it perks as hotels give discounts on group accommodations AND you are sure you get the room that you want in advance.
